Competition and constant struggle to stay ahead of the race keeps us all on our toes today. What we fail to notice is the amount of stress we undergo in the bargain. So what exactly happens when we are stressed? During such an event our adrenal glands release adrenaline, a hormone that activates the defense mechanisms in our body which increases our heart rate, rise in blood pressure, muscles to tense and our pupils to dilate. In simpler terms, stress is a situation in which we feel threatened or frightened.
Stress is also known to cause heart diseases. However here are a few simple stress busters which can go a long way in leading a stress-free life. Read on.
Eat a healthy balanced diet.
For starters, begin having healthy energy-rich wholesome meals. Include bananas and apples in your diet. Bananas are rich in potassium and carbohydrates. Carbohydrates have a relaxing effect as they produce a neurotransmitter called serotonin which gives out a sense of calm to our nerves. Flax seeds counter the effect of piling on pounds while acting as one of the most effective stress-busting foods. Major components of flax seeds inhibit the action of estrogen in the body and fiber in it regulates digestion in our body and lowers cholesterol levels.
Sleep like a baby at night
Ensure you get six to eight hours of sleep at night. Work towards slowing down post-dinner; eat at least two hours before you go to bed. Read a nice book, listen to some soft music, do whatever it takes to keep all your thoughts relate to the day’s events at bay. Have a glass of warm milk and sleep on a comfortable bed. You will need all the energy for a brand new tomorrow. Go to bed early and wake up on time for a systematic start to your day. Morning rushes are the most stressful.
Plan your day.
Make it a habit to jot down all activities that need to be completed at the end of the day. Remember to prioritize. If you know a certain activity would take more of your time than usual, prepare yourself for it. Keep reminders religiously. Do not push yourself, never set unrealistic standards. Learn to control your mind and constantly tell yourself not to stress about anything. We all have some bad days too, brace yourself for them.
Understand the reason behind your stress.
Sit back take a little time off and understand what makes you feel stressed. Different people react in different ways to a given situation. Some may feel motivated while another may feel bogged down. Analyze your feelings during situations causing you stress. Once you figure that out, the battle is half won. Sooner or later you will see yourself prepared to deal with challenging circumstances. Always remember, there will always be a way out.
Relax- Try to spend some time in silence.
Try to step away from the madness around you. Squeeze in some time for yourself during some part of the day when you know things would be slower. Try spending a few moments in silence, free your mind of all thoughts, take a deep breath and unwind.
Pursue your passion.
Discover something you would love to do. There could have been a hobby you gave up earlier on life due to other compelling reasons. Pursue it. Are you a sports enthusiast? Do like to dance. Each one of us would like to certainly unwind in one way or other. Make time for these interests of yours on weekends and holidays. Rediscover your new zeal in life. After all your life is what you make of it.
